Have you ever wondered why we use falconry hoods? These specialized hoods play a crucial role in keeping our patients calm and relaxed during their time in the clinic. By covering their eyes, we reduce sensory intake. A well-designed falconry hood fits snugly, ensuring it doesn't disturb the bird, while allowing proper air circulation and avoiding contact with their eyes, feathers, or breathing...

In November 2021, the Alaska Raptor Center welcomed Fe (FEY), a female American Kestrel from Santa Fe, NM. After her rescue, Fe became too accustomed to humans to survive in the wild. Despite efforts to reintegrate her with other kestrels, she preferred human interaction. Fe now has an important job, educating the public about falcons and the dangers they face in the wild. #Falcon #backstory #b...

Here at the Alaska Raptor Center, we’re committed to ensuring Via, a baby Bald Eagle from Gustavus, AK, doesn’t become too comfortable around humans. Watch as we use a ghillie suit while feeding to prevent habituation. This little one is thriving, receiving about 500 grams of food daily! #BaldEagleRescue #WildlifeRehab #BabyEagle #GustavusWildlife

Red-tailed Hawks like Jake, a Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center, have a powerful, raspy scream that Hollywood loves to use. Whenever you hear a shrill raptor cry in movies or TV shows, it's often a Red-tailed Hawk, no matter what species is on screen. Check out this video of Jake demonstrating the iconic sound! #NatureSounds #BirdsofPrey #DidYouKnow

Pelé, a Peregrine Falcon and Raptor-in-Residence here at the Alaska Raptor Center was found on the ground in Washington. The cause of his injury is unknown, though it is suspected that he collided with a wire. Due to this soft tissue damage, his flight is limited to just a few feet. Pelé now helps to educate the public about Peregrine Falcons and the dangers they face in the wild.

They have to be larger because they possess the reproductive organs, but being heavier means they're not as fast. Also regardless of body size, the male's talons are stronger and bigger in most raptors.

One of the reasons why I love Owls so much is because you always know where they're looking. It's also because their eyes are literally stuck in place, which is why they can do a complete 180 turn with their heads to look around themselves.
